ACADEMICALLY TALENTED

CLC Network educational consultants collaborate with school personnel and families to develop personalized learning experiences for students who have uniquely strong academic motivation and ability. The focus is on assessing each student’s gifts while also making appropriate adjustments in curriculum, classes, and expectations. CLC Network educational consultants partner with school personnel and their families to develop individual educational plans to meet the needs of diverse, academically talented learners. The partnership can also include on-site assessment of the learning community.

EDUCATIONAL PLANNING FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE ACADEMICALLY TALENTED

Acceleration Plans

CLC Network consultants assist families and schools to identify the needs of a particular student who is considered academically talented. Associated with identification of needs is the development of plans to accelerate typical content to match the gifts of a student. Acceleration plans typically include both Curriculum Compacting and Online Classes.

Curriculum Compacting

In Curriculum Compacting, educators decide on the parts of the curriculum that academically talented students are not required to "do" because they have already mastered those parts of the curriculum. CLC Network consultants also help local schools to determine the competencies already held by academically talented students, while designing curriculum goals that stretch students with gifts of cognition.

Online Courses

The CLC Network offers online courses to academically talented middle school students that are designed to explore concepts and skills in an in-depth manner. The following courses are available; see our Online Courses website for more detail.

Enrichment

In enrichment classes and exploratories, students are grouped by area of interest and ability. Groups are targeted to an academic subject in which each member is able to engage his/her higher order thinking skills. Examples of enrichment strategies include:

  • Academic focus groups
  • Independent studies
  • Extracurricular options (e.g., exploratories, clubs, academic competitions)

Differentiation

Differentiation implies the tailoring of general education instruction within the classroom based on the unique abilities of all students. Teachers plan direct instruction with differing groups of students who also receive assignments of varying difficulty. CLC Network consultants assist schools and families to implement differentiation by:

  • Recommending differentiated curricula plans for specific students
  • Providing professional development to teachers and administrators on differentiated instruction techniques

"My daughter was enrolled in the CLC Network online course this past fall while we were in England for a semester. The program was fantastic! The course was set up in a way that allowed flexible and easy access while offering a challenging and engaging curriculum. My daughter enjoyed the content and the community of learners. It was a great opportunity for her to stay connected to students at her academic level while learning in another country. Thanks CLC Network!"
